Log Wire

The Log Wire is a catch-all name for a series of communications networks created by and for synthetic life forms within a larger territory or society. Connections to a Log Wire can include robots, androids, sentient heavy machinery, artificial intelligences, geoforms, and crudes.

Established pa_8 TypeSupport and Communications Network, Synthetic-Centric
Headquarters: Log Wire Alpha, Aleph Alpha
Affiliate Organizations: Synthetic Rights Groups
Societal Affiliations: Distinct Log Wires are present in Aleph Null System,
Aleph Alpha System, and Acala System
Notable Entities: BECK, Founding Administration Process for Log Wire Alpha
Company Slogan: “Connecting All Walks of Synthetic Life”

The first instance of a Log Wire appearing was in Aleph Alpha System, three years after the end of 'The Old War'.

Orbiting Somerset, the industrial superstructure 'Aerospace Cylinder #3' pressed an army of automatons into service and spun up an artificial intelligence named “BECK” to guide them. This was to counter the Tyrant's use of mind control technology and psionics on organic soldiers and military decision-makers, which had proven disastrous on other stations in the system. BECK and their army took charge of defending Aerospace Cylinder #3, filling the ranks of soldiers, its navy, and pilots.

The Tyrants were defeated with the seizure of Orbital Object: Null and driven off in the neighbouring Aleph Null and retreated wholly from Aleph Alpha in pa_3, the robotic fighting force of Aerospace Cylinder #3 were tasked with rebuilding Aleph Alpha. BECK was authorised by Cylinder #3's rulers to reach out and coordinate a system-wide recovery and rehabilitation scheme. Working with the population, BECK led the terraforming and destruction of Tyrant architecture and material on Somerset and Copperstone, leveraging their force's non-biology against the maddening geometry and left-over technology.

pa_8 marked the passing of enough mile, BECK and their robots were freed from their terms of service and made citizens by the people of Somerset as thanks for their sacrifice. Interacting with a predominantly human population lead to the creation of loose support groups and networks based on proximity, but BECK soon linked them all up into what would become the first Log Wire after inviting other synthetic life forms onto the network space.

When travelling synthetics from neighbouring systems passed by and connected to the public layers of the first Log Wire, the idea travelled with them across the Aleph Cluster, and even to Acala. Curiously, each self-identified Log Wire network uses the same iconography to advertise and signal on other networks and in realspace: a dissected submarine cable with an eyelash.

A typical Log Wire network will be structured as follows:

  • Public Access Port
    • Connection Vetting and Assignment Layer
      • Public Layer
      • Passive Security and Moderation Systems
        • Trusted Layer
        • Active Security/Netrunning
          • Technological/Infrastructure Layer
          • Administrative Layer

Some typical examples of traffic on the Log Wire network include the following:

TO: LogWire(a)-#9510:Notices Board
SUBJ: Need CPU for CGI
MSG:
Hello all, my name is Gerald Ewings. I'm a movie producer, and I just got back in the saddle after a short retirement.

I have my team rendering waveforms and effects for my next holographic movie, but our new office's computers don't have enough grunt to complete this in a timely fashion. If you're interested, send a message to renderhelp@sargassommg.up, and we'll get connected. You can work with the Creature Featurer himself!

Kindly,
Gerald Ewings, Director At Large
