Chelti "Navy" Hybrid Cannons

Starship weapons are far larger than almost any ground vehicle can hope to effectively use, requiring an entirely new principle to weapon design. The Chelti void forces, with their relatively low-spec ship design, are often equipped with hybrid guns as primary or secondary weapon to minimize power draw and put out as much firepower as rapidly as possible.

Features

Technical Information

Being a hybrid weapon, the Navy series uses a mixture of chemical propellants, ignited, and the payload further accelerated down the barrel by a mass driver system. Effectively reducing the barrel length of the mass-driver, while also reducing the powder charge for effective velocity. There are no exotic materials or power requirements needed, making these weapons economical to deploy and use.

The ability to change warhead types makes the weapon a high versatile deliver platform munitions and other payloads. However, this does mean that the ship needs to be able to supply and deliver ammo to the gun efficiently.

Design

“Navy” Hybrids are large cannons even in the smallest calibres with extensive recoil management systems, rapid reloading mechanisms, and often cooling systems in rapid firing models. Due to the immense size of the warheads and propellant charges auto-loaders must be used, specifically with hydraulic buffer systems, however if needs be the gun can be reloaded, albeit much more slowly, via recoil only.

Common Calibres

The “Navy Two-Eighty” is a secondary armament on some light warships and a protective armament on some transport voidships to deter attacks. It's 280mm bore diameter is considered small by void artillery standards, but its ammunition is light and relatively easy to stow and feed to the guns.

The most common size, the “Navy Four-Hundred” is considered an optimal size for moderate firepower and capacity. It's 400mm bore can be effective against both lightly protected ships and heavy armor, while still making high rates of fire practical with basic equipment.

Ammo Types

Dumb Fire

No onboard guidance, ballistic trajectory only.

High-Explosive

A very simple and cheap munition choice, excellent for weapon saturation. Effective against light ships, limited effect against heavy armor but still effective in high doses.

Double Penetrating

Capped penetrater designed to pierce and shatter thick armor and punch through ships cleaning.

Smart Munitions

Warheads with limited terminal guidance.

Corrective HE

Less firepower, but onboard thrusters allow the warhead to make limited terminal corrections. Excellent for elusive targets.
