Three dimensional shadows from four or six dimensional space, Bounders are higher dimensional organisms - often simple animals or equivalent to bacterium which can interact with conventional space. Attempts to communicate with Bounders have often ended in combat, though Bounders seem not to prefer extended firefights and have little to no interest in humanoid life, displaying indifference.
Bounders are a spacefaring creature from from a four or six dimensional space, perceiving from a higher dimension of senses. Visual examination pinpoints the shape of a Bounder to be as a series of scintillating, twisted blurs and shadows upon the 'panes' that mark where they begin and end. Scientists theorise that they are solar powered, or consume drifting space dust - trying to liken their existence to the public as 'space jellyfish'.
It is unknown what their motivations are, or if they are even sentient beyond obeying the most immediate impulses of survival.
They are regarded as a threat for unwary space travellers, but many civilian-grade scanning packages can sense dimensional distortions caused by Bounders to avoid confrontation with the creatures. Attacking a bounder without exceptional firepower and experience is not recommended, as their uncertain position and scintillation can throw off tracking and targeting.
A bounder coming into contact with a space vessel is, to put it lightly - bad for the spacecraft's structural integrity. Bystanders and escapees from bounder encounters recall reality coming undone against the hull, the dimensional shock ruptures and fragments the material by stretching it from where the bounder is, to where it is1), and back again.
